Filato is produced by heating the smalti glass and shaping it into long, thin noodles. Filato noodles are flat, round or special shapes with noodles being about 5" long. Flat filato is about 1-2 mm thick and between 1 and 6 mm wide, round filato is 1-2mm in diameter.
The application of filato is varied but a traditional use is in micromosaics. An excellent reference point for micromosaics is the website of Fratelli Traversari, which creates the filato from smalti glass provided by MDM. We have included below a couple of images from Traversari. Also look at our complete section on micromosaics in our webstore.
Filato is available in a palette of 44 colors, all of which are available in di Mosaico's standard inventory.
